from one highway exit to another

vacant roads never ask again
to be trampled by steel and rubber
for a continued hum that echoes
even in the aftermath of existence
once the streetlights have fizzled out
and the earth reclaims the concrete
you still yearn to be bloodied and bruised
by careless drivers

have you ever stopped to ask yourself
why you crave to be run over?
what do you fear of abandonment?
why do you fight the weeds as they consume you?

yes,
there may sometimes be wanderers
who seek out the life that once was
but there has never been appreciation
for cracked pavement
you will have your holes filled with tar
to drown out the life that tries to thrive beneath you
